Picture the scene, which we followed and reported at the time, back in 2022. A retired couple driving through Greater Manchester are pulled over — and find themselves surrounded by twelve officers and six marked police cars.

Glen Dyson, a retired union official, assumed he’d driven into the middle of a major crime operation. Then it was explained to him. The emergency was the spacing of the characters on his number plate.

His wife Karen, who’d had the same registration on their vehicles for twelve years, was left shaken, saying afterwards that she’d had no idea they’d done anything wrong.

A Dozen Officers, One Registration Plate

What made the story land wasn’t the offence itself — it was the arithmetic. Mr Dyson pointed out that six police cars were tied up stopping Motorists for minor traffic matters, in broad daylight, in a region where he said his own local pub had called the police about an altercation within the previous year and nobody came.

Greater Manchester Police’s response at the time was that the force was taking an increasingly proactive approach to fighting and preventing crime. Which will have been a great comfort to the Dysons.

You can argue about police priorities all day long. What you can’t argue with is the law that made the stop possible in the first place — because it applies to the plate on the front of your car right now.

What the Law Actually Says About Your Plate

Number plates in the UK are governed by the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, and the rules are precise to the millimetre: 11mm between individual characters, 33mm between the two character groups, one approved font, fixed character dimensions.

Squeeze the characters of your private plate together so it reads more like a name, and you’ve committed an offence — even if the registration itself cost you a five-figure sum.

The penalties stack up quickly. A fine of up to £1,000. An automatic MOT failure. And, most painfully for owners of private registrations, the DVLA can withdraw the registration entirely — without compensation. The plate you paid thousands for simply ceases to be yours.

So yes, a mis-spaced plate genuinely is an offence. Whether it warrants a dozen officers is a question we’ll leave with Greater Manchester Police.

When Complying Isn’t Enough

One of our Members learned how quickly a plate stop can escalate. He was approached by an officer in a car park over the spacing on his private registration — a plate he’d paid a significant sum to use — and, being a YouTuber, he began filming the encounter.

By his account, he answered every question put to him: who he was, the details of the vehicle. He drew the line only at the demand to get out of his car, respectfully declining.

What followed, he told us, was being pulled from the vehicle and taken away to a cell — over character spacing on a registration plate.

We can’t independently referee what happened in that car park. But the pattern it fits is one every Motorist should understand: minor plate matters are a doorway to a much bigger interaction, and how that interaction is handled — on both sides — decides where it ends.

Here’s the practical takeaway. A number plate is the single most visible thing on your car, readable by every officer and every ANPR camera you pass. If it’s non-compliant, you are volunteering to be stopped — and once you’re stopped, everything else about you and your vehicle is on the table.

Check your spacing against the rules, especially on a private plate, and especially if a previous owner or plate supplier fitted it. Two minutes with a ruler can save you a thousand pounds and the plate itself.

And if a roadside stop has already turned into something more — a NIP, points, a summons — don’t assume the official version of events is the final word.
