British Drivers Were Caught Speeding 2.5 Million Times in 2024 — a New Record

• Drivers in England and Wales were caught speeding a record 2,536,194 times in 2024 — 86 per cent of all recorded motoring offences.
• One camera on the King’s Road in Chelsea caught 851 Drivers in a single day — believed to be a UK record.

In 2024, Drivers in England and Wales were caught speeding 2,536,194 times — the highest number since comparable records began in 2011.

That works out at roughly 6,800 Drivers caught every single day. And it doesn’t even include London, where the Metropolitan Police logged nearly 600,000 motoring offences of its own in 2024 — up 19 per cent on 2023.

Speeding now accounts for 86 per cent of everything on the motoring charge sheet. Add the rest in and the total for England and Wales outside the capital reached 2.9 million offences — also a record, and up 9 per cent in a single year.

Britain has never fined its Motorists on this scale before, and every measure says the machine is still accelerating.

The Records Just Keep Falling

Back in 2017, we reported a study by the RAC Foundation which found that one in three British Motorists was receiving a penalty notice of some kind every year — around 12 million notices annually once parking and bus lane fines were counted, worth more than £800 million.

At the time, those numbers looked like a high-water mark. They weren’t.

The Home Office figures for 2024 show enforcement has climbed relentlessly since, with speeding offences setting a fresh record almost every year outside the pandemic.

Of all the Motorists caught in 2024, just over half were sent on a retraining course, 37 per cent took the fine and the points, and 12 per cent ended up in Court. On top of that, 1.84 million Drivers sat a speed awareness course in 2024 — up 3 per cent on 2023.

So who, exactly, is doing all this catching? Increasingly, it isn’t a police officer at all.

The Cameras Doing the Heavy Lifting

Freedom of Information data released in 2026, covering 24 police areas, shows just how productive a single camera has become.

One camera on the A40 in north-west London issued 50,000 fines in 2024 — more than £5 million generated by one pole at the side of one road.

Another, on the King’s Road in Chelsea, caught 851 Drivers in a single day, believed to be a UK record. That’s a Driver every 100 seconds or so, all day long, from one device.

Enforcement on this scale simply wasn’t possible when a prosecution needed an officer at the roadside. Automation changed the economics entirely — a camera never clocks off, never takes a lunch break, and never exercises discretion.

Where the Money Actually Goes

Every penny from Fixed Penalty Notices and Court fines for speeding goes straight to the Treasury as general Government expenditure. None of it is ring-fenced for the roads you drive on.

Speed camera fines alone are worth around £100 million a year. In 2025, police forces and road safety charities asked the Government to let that money be reinvested locally — in safer junctions, traffic calming, and road safety education.

The Department for Transport’s response was that it has “no plans to change” the system.
