Back in 2019, we followed the case of John Anderson, a 74-year-old Driver facing a speeding charge on a motorway.
By the time his case was thrown out — the day before he was due in Court — he had spent £12,000 on his defence. And because of how the costs rules work, winning didn’t mean getting that money back.
Most people hear a story like that and reach the obvious conclusion: greedy lawyers, fleecing a pensioner. It’s the conclusion a lifetime of TV drama has trained us to reach — the lawyer as parasite, bumbling fool, or sociopath for hire.
